Ryyan Alshebl, a Syrian refugee, has been chosen as the mayor of a German hamlet.

He ran as an independent for mayor of Ostelsheim in Baden-Württemberg, a state in the southwest.

He received a majority of votes, or 55.41 percent, on Sunday evening, and the municipality proclaimed him the winner.

Marco Strauß and Mathias Fey, two independent candidates, were beaten by 29-year-old Alshebl.

The Green Party member described his election campaign experiences as "mainly favorable."

Alshebl said as mayor that he intended to relocate to Ostelsheim in the Calw district.

In 2015, he left the southern Syrian town of Sweida, and in 2016, he began working at the Althengstett town hall administration.
